Danvers

Like several of its neighbors on the North Coast, Danvers is proud of its history as part of the setting for the Salem witch trials in 1692. The home of one such “witch,” Rebecca Nurse, is still standing and open to visitors. Danvers is also known in Massachusetts as the home of the Danvers State Hospital, a mental institution using historic architecture. It has been the scene of at least two horror movies and is rumored to be the inspiration for author H.P. Lovecraft’s Arkham Sanitarium and the Arkham Asylum in the Batman stories. Danvers residents do legal business at the Salem District Court in nearby Salem, which also serves Salem itself, Beverly, Middleton and Manchester by the Sea.
